Living with Style and Spirit: An Everyday Thing

Some time ago, someone sent me an email about “How to Find Balance in Your Life”.

I’m not sure who the original author was, but I really liked it, and I thought it would be fantastic to share with everyone.

I also found a report on Times Online, about how scientists in the UK did a study and found the “5 Steps to Happiness and Wellbeing” or something like that.

I combined them and added a few ideas to share below.

So this is my list of 5 Things To Do Everyday:

1. Do something enjoyable.

Enjoyable things can be simple acts that are easy to do, don’t cost very much, and don’t take much planning.

Just sitting quietly in my garden and enjoying a cup of tea is very enjoyable for me! I love baking. I like to paint my toenails. Read a chapter of my book. Chat to a girlfriend. I like to plan to visit a new place, and discovering something new and cool. I really enjoy journaling and writing.

Of course, a girly pamper is always nice – facials, haircuts, manicures, pedicures, massages.
Take time to really enjoy them. Allow yourself to glow with happiness each day.

2. Do something active.

Spend 30 minutes of your day working up a sweat! Get your heart rate up! Skip. Swim. Run up and down steps. Go for a jog. Ride a bike. Find a step, turn on some music, and do a step workout. Do squats and leg lunges. Go to the beach and have a run. Take a stroll. Do some gardening. Kick a ball in the park with your pet.

Try playing a sport like squash, tennis, soccer, badminton, netball. Sign up to an exercise class, yoga or pilates. Try body jams, or kickboxing just for fun.

3. Do something brainy, challenging or intellectual.

Spend at least 30 minutes a day exercising your brain! Read a book. Read a newspaper. Watch the news. Write a letter. Memorise a song. Do a puzzle. Go to the library and pick up a book in a subject that has always fascinated you. Learn something new each day.

Learn a new skill. Try sewing. Try fixing something. Try making something. Try cooking something. Try organising a lunch for friends on the weekend.

4. Do something good for someone else.

Call up a friend. Offer to help in some way. Bake some cupcakes for a girlfriend and bring it around.

Smile or say hello to a stranger. Let someone with less shopping into the queue in front of you. Do a good deed. A small kind act. Spread some happiness.

You’ll find that if you go about your day thinking, “How can I be nice to someone?” you’ll often find many unexpected opportunities to do so.

5. Take one moment to savour life and your surroundings.

This is my favourite. Whether you are in the car, or walking along, or at home – take a moment to think about something good in your life, or in your surroundings.

Take notice of something beautiful. Look at the details of a building you walk past everyday. Look at the shape of the clouds, remember them, and compare them with the clouds the next day.

Argh..I've been SO BUSY.

I've been taking up two difficult task at same time and going for 2 important interviews in next month. It's gonna be tough. *pray hard*

I've bought myself a new hand phone finally! *grin* I bought another cheaper hp instead of my dream I-Phone due to my "big head prawness". Well, my highest record was losing 2 hand phones within a year. Ahem... so I'm very proud of the wise decision that I've made, and I just love my new hand phone! It's adorable, it's printed with beautiful floral and it's white!

I am having bad flu since last week, it still doesn't go away after taking the medicine. And I think I can't live without ice and ice and ice.....cream! When can I hear my sweet voice again? I'm just sick of my husky voice now!

I'm going to take part in another marathon in December. It's fund raising event for my primary school, anyone who is interested just pop me an email. And I shall sent you a link.

Christmas is at the corner, time really flies. I still thought of my last warmest white Christmas in Winter Korea. And I've started to prepare all the Christmas prezzies! My heart and mood is swinging with the jingles and bells in the air! ^^

And I'm leaving to Bangkok in Christmas for one whole week! Yay!

These last few days, I’ve been thinking about my relationship.

Yes, we’ve gone through some trying times. But despite all that, him and I, our relationship, it’s pretty damn amazing.

Loving. Full of happiness. Full of massages. Love songs before sleep. Meaningful conversations about things that matter. Daily giggles about random silliness. Delicious food and healthy living. Long hugs. Quiet moments. Lots of laughter. Mutual adoration, honesty and support. The highest regard for each other. And a passion for living.

Everyday he makes me want to be a better person.

I’m crazy in love.

In terms of our temperaments and personalities, I believe we’re very different.

But we share the same values, feelings and goals towards things like family, friends, health, work, money, stress, holidays, how we spend out time, our future plans.

Everyday he tells me how much he loves and cares for me, and loves his life with me. Sometimes it’s silly, sometimes it’s random, and sometimes it brings a tear to my eye.

I’m indeed one lucky woman.

How to Stay Sane!

I decided to write up a list of all the stuff that I do to keep my life balanced and sane. Most are painfully obvious, but a list is a list, and I do actually stick to every single one of them!

1. Get a hobby. Something to dabble with for one hour a day. Blogging. Reading. Stitching. Gardening. Something easy to pick up and put down. Do some night classes. Don’t let your brain turn into mush!

2. Keep like-minded friends. I believe you need to regularly hang out with people with the same values on life interests.

3. Create a routine. I keep to a weekly routine which I try to balance with varied activities, for myself.

4. Break the routine! Don’t be afraid to drop the routine everyone once and a while. When things get tough, don’t be so hard on yourself. Don’t be so rigid all the time. Relax!

5. Keep a full schedule. I know it sounds weird, but I even need to schedule in playtime. My worst days come about when I’m feeling unmotivated to organise a playdate or activity. I end up dictate what to do and… it ALWAYS goes bad.

6. Find some alone time, weekly. This is an absolute must. Go shopping. Sit in a cafe. Get your hair done. Meet up with girlfriends.

7. Find alone time with your partner, weekly! This is another absolute must. Take a walk. Sit in a cafe. Go out to dinner. Watch a movie. Look into their eyes, and remember why you decided to be with this person in the first place.

8. Be active. Get out of the house at least once a day. Kick a ball around. Ride bikes. Water the garden.

9. Look for things to do in your community. Find cool parks, cafes, restaurants, new places to hang out..

10. Look after yourself! Exercise, keep up your dental and hair appointments, buy new clothes. It’s so easy to fall into the trap of dressing sloppy when you go out. But it’s so surprising what something so simple – like new underwear – can make you feel!!

My white little pup passed away on Friday night.

I was very upset.
I was surprised at how much i cried.

I just bought him a new blue necklace on last Monday, thought of giving him a little prezzie for being new and part of our family.

Although he's just a month with us, but it's been lotsa sweet memories, laughters, mishevious him, cute, funny, loving, and his warmest way to welcome us home..

Now, a few days later, I still feel numb.
My soul seems to lack feeling. Nothing, just heaviness.
A weight of sadness.
It doesn’t seem real.
I can’t believe he’s gone.
I miss him heaps.

Golden Linguistic Moments

He calls spaghetti – Mister Getty.

Important is Port Tenant.

Comfortable is actually a Comfy Table.

Dessert is Berserk.

And Pistachios are Moustachios.

And sometimes, just for fun, I like to make him say them all in one sentence.

Personal Goals - August 2009

Hey, we’re up to month number 8 already!

So once again, here are what I'm doing and what I'm trying to achieve for this month.

1) Look After My Skin

i) Wear sun cream. Use a good quality moisturiser with at least SPF 15+. Apply in the morning and re-apply in the afternoon. I’ve switched my day moisturiser, tinted-moisturiser and foundation to products with SPF.

ii) Cut down on chocolate. Too much sugar is really bad for skin. I have to be honest with myself, there are only 3 days in the month that I actually NEED CHOCOLATE. So there is a complete ban on chocolate for the other 28 or so days! Wish me luck!

iii) Give up coffee! Too much caffeine is absolutely evil for your skin and body! So I don’t touch the stuff any more.

iv) Drink more water. I’m always reluctant to drink more when it’s too busy and cold.

v) Get more sleep. Most of the day I’ve been getting to bed only after late night. Trying to get to bed earlier, say like 11pm/12am and get up by 6am for morning runs.

2) Improve my fitness
I haven't been sweating much for weeks, arghh I need to do some swimming and runs!

3) Get Organised!!
I’m all over the place! I have so much happening these next two months!!!

4) Find 5 things to be thankful for.
Some days I am skipping with happiness or energy. Other days I’m miserable with despair and frustration. I’ve found a nice habit to do – whether it is a good day or a bad day – to find 5 things to be thankful for.

5) Re-energise myself daily.
I try to get some rest during the day. I can’t nap. So instead, I find some quiet time to lie down for at least 30 minutes each day.

6) Save money!
I’m being much more mindful about the money I spend. Eep!

Packing

We're moving to our new house one week ago - so I spent the weekend packing. There’s so much to do!

Many people have suggested professional removalist - who come in, pack EVERYSINGLETHING into boxes, haul it all to the new place, unpack, then leave with a couple of hundred bucks. Sigh. It sounds like a hassle-free solution. But I have a real problem with strangers touching my stuff. In fact, I don’t feel comfortable with the idea of my friends and family looking and sorting through my things.

So yes, we’re doing it the old fashion way. Pack everything into boxes. Label them. And those who want to help can move them to and from the truck.

Anyway. I used to make junk furniture art when I was a teenager. And I still have boxes and boxes and boxes of string, nails, bits of cardboard, wire, straw, gauze, sticks, feathers, ribbons, beads, rocks, different coloured sand, material scraps, empty film canisters, old batteries, broken bits of plastic mechanical things (clocks, radios, computer parts, heaters, toys, kitchen appliances), etc. And I keep them because I don’t ever want to be in a situation where I desperately need 16 yellow ping pong balls…

I also wrote letters before I went cyber. So I have many shoe boxes full of letters, Christmas and birthday cards.

I also can’t bear to throw away my old clothes! I swear my late 90s tencel jeans will come back in fashion.

But what I love doing most is collecting objects which remind me of certain places and moments in life. I have rocks from Islands. Pebbles from Australia. A chopstick holder in shape of a naked lady I stole from a Chinese restaurant where I was the photographer at my friend’s wedding reception. The neatly folded gift wrapping of a present given to me by my first boyfriend.

Someone once told me , aside from ‘death of a loved one’ and ‘divorce’, ‘moving houses’ is one of the most stressful things one can experience in life. And in true Jessica form, I’m secretly striving to prove them otherwise.

Wow that one crept up on me. I remember it was January not so long ago. Now we’re halfway through the year.

6 months have gone. And there are 6 months left. What happened? What did I achieve? What were the highlights? And now, what am I going to do with the rest of the year?

Out of habit, I like to claim July for myself. All of it.

I like to indulge myself a little. I like to buy myself something new. I like to organise a party for myself, or two. I like to think of something I’ve always wanted to do, and heck, just do it.

I also like to sit back and remember the good things in my life. I like to celebrate the stuff that really matter.

My God, my life has been changed.

Most of the days, I went out to dinner, movie, and do some outdoor activities with my love. We have so much to say to each other. I’m astounded that I’ve known this guy for more than 4 years and we fall in love at the end. Life is always full of surprises.

Thursday, I've breakfast with my god brother who came back from Bangkok. It’s always so cool to hang around with good friends, talking, laughing and simply being yourself. Knowing that they love you for being you.

Saturday, in the evening, I went out with my family for dinner to celebrate my mum's birthday. One of my favourite cuisine, seafood.

Today I celebrate happiness. My life. My love. My family. My friends. My new house. My work.

Me, Myself and Me Time

Hey sorry to all my followers, I knew that I seldom blogging lately.

The other day, I've received a warm and caring oversea called from my beloved god brother. And that I realize I've been losing contacts with the outside world. Rarely online msn, no blogging, not even updating anything in facebook. Erm..and the worst thing is, I didn't realize it at all!

But no matter how hectic is my life, I always have time for myself.

By the time I was a young woman in my early 20s, I had worked overseas, gone through bumpy relationships, worked hard, partied hard, made friends, lost friends, earned money, spent money… all to realise one thing – that I was all over the place and I needed some stability.

Basically, I had to love myself a bit more.

I had to sit back and remember who I was.

So I slowed down. I learned how to enjoy my own company. How to be by myself.

I sat in cafes by myself. I sipped coffee and ate BLTs. I read books on park benches. I took long walks. I went jogging. I went shopping. I explored new places. Visited art galleries. Went to the beach. All by myself.

I loved it.

I loved the whacky conversations in my head. I loved how my creative juices would flow. I loved seeing the world with my own eyes and hearing my own thoughts.

And most of all, I loved being happy, positive, strong and confident. By myself.

Several years later, I might get married, travel a bit, move house, have children, and starting my new life as a wife and mother. A companion and a nurturer.

Never have I been happier. Yet, never have I realised the importance of ME TIME.

It’s easy to forget that I’m still Jessica.

It’s easy to forget that I once liked things like… kick boxing, Latin dancing, scuba diving, yoga, cycling, rock climbing, swimming..

It’s even easier to forget that, I once upon a time… I wanted to try wind surfing! Canoeing! White water rafting! I want to try a 3 day camping hike in the Australian bush! I want to climb Mount Kinabalu! I want to run more often in a marathon!

Life has been loaded with so much work. But in the other hand, life is sweet, joyful and as great as it could be.

I just love the way how it comes to me.

Life Sweetest Word

10 years ago, this month, we weren't in good place.

My dad had his first heart attacked. It was an aggressive attacked, resistant to heart operation, and there was no guarantee of success.That year, I was 16.

When everytime dad admitted hospital, everything that comes and goes, I sit and make myself remember it all.

I remember the bleakness. I remember driving through rain, towards the hospital, walking through a car park littered with leaves. I remember the smell of the corridors. The sounds of the machines and medicines. I remember having no joy in my spirit.

I remember trying to live - one day at the time. Having to concentrate on just getting through that single day. It was too painful to think about the future, or life. I would crumble at the thought of how the little things would never be the same - a family picnic in the park, a trip to the beach, a cup of tea at a cafe.

I remember thinking that I might lose my dad. That I would be sitting in our house, with every single object around me, reminding me of the one I love. That I might forget his face.

I remember the sheer focus and mental discipline that was needed to stop myself from going mad. The thousands of terrible and depressing thoughts, raining relentlessly in my head, images I couldn’t stop, clouding my view, gripping, choking, dragging me down to that deep, dark place.

I remember faith. Holding on to this really huge floating thing that kept my head above the water. I wasn’t exactly sure what to do with it, nor why I was doing it at the time, but it was big, much bigger than me, and it worked.

I remember the helplessness. I remember I couldn’t do a single thing to change anything. Nothing. Just hopelessness. Emptiness. And heart-wrenching sadness.

Then I snap out of it. I sit back from my reverie, and I think, Oh my God, how did I escape that one?

Did it really happen? Is this real? Am I REALLY sitting here with my dad and mum? With everyone smiling and laughing and happy as can be?

Why did things turn out like this? What on earth did I do to deserve it?

I’ve come to realise that the words “fate” and “destiny” are meaningless to me.

Whereas I discover one of life’s sweetest words - grace.

It heals all that is broken inside me, and makes me want to change my life. To live the best I can. With purpose. With significance. With gratitude. With happiness.

Happy Father's day to all of you.

Turning 26 - Part II

Had a great Sunday at GOLD COAST, Morib.

So I’ve turned 26 this year. It’s an anti-climactic event really. Yes, I’m one year older.

I like to think that I’m a very strong, optimistic person with a positive outlook on life. Yet I’m getting pretty edgy about turning 30 soon. I’m not sure why. The feeling is so incompatible with the rest of my life.

My friends kindly point out that I already have my own business, and it's running pretty well, a house, gone through various difficulties in life, travelled, worked overseas – WHAT MORE DO I WANT?

I answer, “A soul mate, and MORE maybe?”

“What MORE IS THERE??”

Perhaps this MORE is a spiritual one – who am I, and what am I actually here on earth for? – Rather than the pursuit of a bigger house, bigger entertainment system and more expensive holidays.

I guess I genuinely feel like I haven’t accomplished anything yet. Accomplished what? I don’t know. I feel like I haven’t quite reached my potential – that I’ve been dabbling around the edges of something significant for most of my life.

I feel like I haven’t yet been able to fully spread my wings and SOAR over the world like I was supposed to. And something in me is burning and bursting to break out.

Ah, it sounds ridiculous.

On the other hand, I still feel like I’m 17. I still feel like a silly teenager, happy, girly, irresponsible and selfish. Deep down I don’t feel like a “grown up”. Will I ever feel like a grown up? Will I always feel 17?

And on the other OTHER hand, I know that there’s still SO MUCH in life to try, learn and experience! So much to do! I want it all! Life! Needs to be lived!

Life is back to normal.

My birthday wish for this year has come true! Dad has discharged from Hospital on last Monday. It was a miracle that we’ve walked away from all of this triumphant.

A miracle and triumph that can only be described as the grace of God.

So my actual birthday was today. But I already have birthday dinner with family on last Friday. The dinner was tasty. We had yummy Chinese meal at Shanghai Restaurant, JW Marriot Hotel followed by movie. It was such a lovely evening.

And I've got flowers this morning! What a surprise! I'm indeed very, very happy!

Eeek I'm 26 everyone! Thanks again for all your birthday whishes!

New Camera

I finally bought myself a new digital camera! My old one has been snatched in March, and I’ve been borrowing my dad’s camera since then. It took me more than a month to research, save up, ask around… and I settled on a Canon Digital IXUS 95 IS. Basically a well priced compact camera, with full manual controls. I’m very happy.

I must admit, I was momentarily dazzled - but not overly impressed - by all the new colouring features. Are they really neccessary? Maybe I’m just a bit old school. Or too much of a Photoshop geek.

I found myself stuck in a tree.

Cold and wet.

Rain dripping on my head.

Hair matted against my face like sticky icicles.

I was jogging. Huffing and puffing through the park. I leapt over shimmering puddles on the footpath. My warm rosy cheeks welcomed the light drizzle.

But as the rain began to pour from the sky and the colours of the park faded into a dull grey haze, I found a patch of dry grass under a tree and I waited. I waited and waited.

As I think back now, I’m not sure what possessed me, but I thought it’d be really cool to climb the tree. Relieve my boredom? Better view perhaps? Maybe I’ll stumble upon some other critter also waiting for the rain to stop?

So there I sat. Three branches up. Swaying in the breeze.The last branch notch filled up with water, became too slippery and I couldn’t get a proper grip to get back down. I felt like such a retard. Just me and my two braincells.

Birds flew by and snickered. Ants and caterpillars were showing off. And the tree groaned in burdensome displeasure. In the end I had to take off my jacket, wedge it into the footing and make my way down in an inelegant tangle of legs and arms. I felt like such an island girl after that.

The promise about --'all good things come to pass.' What it really means is -- all good things will come -- comma -- to pass. Nothing ever remains. Everything is always changing. Like that warning, 'even this shall pass away.' I suppose that includes the sadness, as well as the gladness. If you wait long enough, the gladness returns again.

A nice, warm bath and a cup of good, nourishing soup can solve any problem.

New House Preview

We went for the final inspection of our new house today!

4 weeks ago (when we bought the house) we only looked around for 20 minutes. We fell in love with it instantly and put an offer on the place a few hours later.

So yes, it’s 4 weeks later, and I am very VERY keen to see the place again.

I was a little scared that we might have been caught up in the MOMENT and that the house was actually crap. Scared that if we looked at the house a second time, we’d find some outrageous problem that we didn’t spot the first time. Or that it was smaller than we imagined. Or that it had burnt down.

But what I was MOST worried about… was that I might look around the house and decide that I didn’t really like it anymore. Aaak. Can I change my mind?

Anyway, as we arrived at the house I was struck by how small it looked from the outside. As we walked around checking lights, stove, oven, sprinklers, locks, doors, windows…. I knew we had bought a gem. The rooms were all a great size, heaps of storage, nice division of living spaces, beautiful kitchen, and best of all… the previous owners looked after the house REALLY well.

I was so happy with the house, that I didn’t seem to mind the nightmare, albeit superficial, that would betray my sense of taste-pride. The colours of the walls and carpets were shocking! Pink. Speckled brown.

Best Pancakes Ever

Every Sunday morning I try to make something a little special for breakfast. I absolutely love these mini pancakes (or pikelets), especially with fruit.

1 cup (150g) self-raising flour
2 tablespoons of castor sugar (optional)
1 egg, beaten lightly
¾ cup (180ml) of milk
butter for cooking

1. Mix flour and sugar
2. Mix in egg and milk, to make a smooth batter.
3. Add a bit of butter to lightly coat a hot pan. Pour dessert-spoons of pancake mixture onto the pan.
4. Wait for bubbles to appear on the surface of the pancake, flip!
5. Serve hot with fruit, yoghurt and honey!

My parents don’t like their pancakes to be stacked up, so I serve them like biscuits.

Rainy Days

The last couple of days have been cold. Cold, rainy, wet and gloomy. The rainy days have brought a gorgeous warmth to our house. The spaces seem smaller. The rooms feel cosier. The corners glow with intimacy.

I’ve been nursing a flu. Catching up on sleep. Reading a book. Staring out the window, watching the rain fall in the garden. And sipping on steaming cups of gen mai cha.

I made a HUGE pot of chunky winter vegetable soup with red lentils. I made it Monday evening, and we were still eating it yesterday. Hee hee. It was DELICIOUS. Especially with crusty garlic bread. And especially since I varied the recipe to suit my own tastes (ie. threw together whatever vegetables I had in sitting my fridge and pantry).

I just love rainy days.

Pizza: Vegetarian and Cheeseless

My family is trying to eat less cheese and dairy. So with homemade vegetarian pizzas for dinner, I decided to make mum and dad a cheese-less version.

Pita bread with tomato paste, chopped tomatoes, capsicums, green beans, olives, mushrooms.

I cracked an egg in the centre and sprinkled some dukkah (an Egyptian blend of spices and crushed nuts), salt, and cracked pepper all over. Into a 180C oven for 20 minutes.

The smell of the roasted dukkah was INCREDIBLE. My goodness, I could hardly contain myself.

And then I noticed that I had accidentally crumbled feta onto it… CHEESE! OOPS. Silly me. So I decided to eat it myself.

(I made them another one! I’m not that mean!)

Personal Monthly Goals - Febraury 2009

I don’t think I’m a naturally disciplined and focused person.

I’m more of a “all over the place person”. I have so many interests and passions, that I often find myself losing focus.

I get easily distracted by problems and projects. I get side-tracked by interesting projects that pop up. Or I have little flits of inspiration that take up large amounts of time.

I think if I didn’t practice any self-discipline, I’d find myself 5 years down the track, thinking, “Huh? Where’d my life go? What did I do with my time?”

So I believe in setting personal and life goals.

Throughout 2008, I’ve made it a point to reflect and work on them every month. And I must say, I’ve found it to be very fulfilling and rewarding.

My goals for the new year are [still] very simple.

Take care of myself. Eat well. Live well. Exercise. Have time for myself. Balance my activities. Manage my stress and anxiety.

Take care of my family. Love my parents. Make time for them. Talk. Laugh. Be honest.

Take care of my pets. Have alone time with each of my pet. Talk to them. Play with them. Enjoy them. Create happy experiences for them.

Be part of my community. Make time for friends. Give my time to helping others. Organise gatherings.

I do have a few more ambitious goals. But these take second place to the ones mentioned above.

1) Develop and dedicate a bit more time and energy to this blog.

2) Run in a marathon more ofthen.

3) Master the guitar and keep upgrade my violin.

4) Learn to speak Korean and French.

A Time for Reflection and Hope

The other evening I happened to watch a 5 minute special news feature – a video compilation of people and events that defined 2008.

There were earth quakes in China. Bombings in India. War in the Middle East. Terror. Floods. Famine. Disease. Financial Crisis.

Then there was the Olympics in Beijing. Reconciliation for Indigenous Australians. Presidential election in America. And so much more.

I must admit, I was moved. By it all. The good and the bad.

I was struck by a phenomenal amount of sadness. Yet I was filled with a deep sense of hope. 2008 has been quite a year for the world. For everyone. For me.

My heart goes out to all my friends. May you find hope and happiness, in this new year.

今天又收到一个朋友的投诉说，喂你呀好久都没写部落格了。。。

想一想真的很久了。。

多久没有坐下好好地读一本书，
多久没有静静的听我爱的CD,
多久没有痛快的畅泳，
多久没有对人说。。。我，喜欢你呢？

那天晚上，有机会到一个环境幽美，四处都布满虫鸣，浪漫的公园。我真的很享受那份恬静的时刻，耳边传来爵士乐淡淡的旋律，眼前是伴着点点灯光绝美的湖泊。我竟呆呆的坐着，忘了身在何处。。

那晚，是难忘的夜晚。。太久没有过那样的时光了，感激那位带我去的朋友。

生活中有时候太匆忙，忘了要停下脚步，看一看身边的人事物。天上的星星从来没有离开过，然而人们却一直忘了抬头仰望，幸福其实一直就在身边。

假如命运折断了希望的风帆，请不要绝望，岸还在；假如命运凋零了美丽的花瓣，请不要沉沦，春还在；生活终有无尽的麻烦，请不要无奈，因为路还在，梦还在，阳光还在，我们还在。

Happy 牛 (Niu - cow) Year Everyone!!

Ooh, I love this time of year. The other day, I went to visit my friend's house. Her mother, and a whole host of the aunties were zipping around making yummy Chinese cookies for the New Year. Her dining table was groaning with the weight of pineapple tarts, love letters, kok chai’s (peanut puffs) and zillions of other things I don’t know how to pronounce. There were bags of flour on the floor, lumps of doughs on chairs, bottles of fruit and nuts in boxes, and towers of biscuit tins and cookie-making things in doorways. There was a certain Chinese-kitchen madness to it all. And the whole house smelt like the inside of a warm, sugary pastry kitchen. Just divine.

Coming together and making Chinese New Year goodies is a yearly tradition for my granpma’s generation. My generation has never been involved in it. We were always “too young” and “got in the way” of a well oiled system. We were always too slow. Made them too big. Used too much filling. Burnt the sides. Rolled the pastry too thin. Or didn’t press the edges down properly. In the end, we would just sit around waiting for the wonky shaped ones to cook so we could eat them, and and lick the mixing bowls. Haha..

Anyway, this year is gonna be different, we aren't going back to mum's hometown since dad's health condition isn't well. So we are going to celebrate with my father's side relative to have reunion dinner in KL. And I swear I'm going to burst with all the food in my tummy, because I can imagine how much delicious home-made banquet are they going to prepare for 30+ people!

Oh, I just love the quirks of big family!

My 5 yo Golden Retriever, Bean.

I finally bought the DVD of 10 Promises To My Dog.

Most of the scene in the movie looks familiar to me. Because I do live with a Golden for more than five years, ever since she's a two month old pup.

At the last part, when socks died made my heart broken into thousand pieces. I cried, suddenly I realize my Bean is getting much older. I turned to her and I can't imagine if she's gonna leave me one day.

Life was not the same without my Bean Bean.

Monthly Personal Goals - December 2008

It's already end of the year, it's December! My favorite month of all.

I love winter time, I love snow, I love Christmas, I love prezzies, and I love holidays! *goofy grin*

Every month I make myself think about my personal life goals.

I might set new goals, revisit on-going ones, check up on how I’m doing in various areas in my life. I’m not strict about it. It’s just nice to create a space for my thoughts.

My last few months of personal goals have been very simple – Everything is basically about keeping myself together, sane and healthy. Not to mention about my hectic working life, I want to continue living a balanced life.

I can’t exactly pinpoint a beginning, but I think I have always been plagued by a “wanting to achieve something”.

A wanting to be special. A desire do something significant. A yearning to stand out of the crowd in a special way. A hunger to be someone amazing and inspirational. To live an admirable life and make a difference.

I have always looked up to amazing women. Female scientists, politicians, designers, humanitarians, artists, writers, public figures. Women who have conquered illness, climbed mountains, helped build hospitals for dying children, inspired millions. I would read about their lives and be filled with utter amazement and awe.

And who am I? Absolutely nobody. Just plain old Jessica. Living in Kuala Lumpur.

Until I realised that my life is how I choose to live it.

I can sit back and envy others, or I can try to make a difference.

I can focus on my inadequacies and insecurities, or I can be significant in my very own special way.

So, here I am.

I am turning 26, and it is a new beginning.

All my little puppies have finally opened their eyes! Now they can run around, grumbling over each others and have started to eat puppy's food!

It's just wonderful and amazing watching them growing up day by day.

第十届书香国际中文书展

当第十届书香国际中文书展在马来西亚如火如荼地展开之际，正是我忙得头昏脑胀的时候。。拖到最后的今天，我不顾一切、冒着大雨也要前去，终于没有错过这盛大的书展。

去之前在《肥佬蟹》跟爸妈享受了一顿丰盛又快乐的晚餐。已不记得上一次何时在这用餐了，但环境依然优美。我们选择湖畔的位子，将美丽的湖水尽收眼廉。晚餐后天下起了滂沱大雨，坐在湖边的我们得以欣赏漂亮的湖色。从平静不时有小船划过，至雷电交加喘急的湖水都别有一番天地。辽阔的天际，看着大自然的变化，多么的神奇，多美呀！

纵然雨势没有转小，但我们还是冒雨赶往书展。大约八点钟到达，现场比我想像中小，可能已是尾声所以人潮不会太拥挤。很多书大概已卖光，但我们还是在最后两小时内买到了超值、超棒的书！共花了马币六百多令吉。 *咋舌*

对我来说，买书永远比买衣服快乐。能读到一本好书，尤如听到优美的音乐、喝着喜爱的咖啡，一样令人感觉那么地幸福。

Although we do not have cold winter in Malaysia but I'm gonna have a white Christmas this year. These scarves from Anthropologie are enough to inspire me to dress up a simple black dress, or white top and pants. Love the colors!

Raspberry and White Chocolate Muffins

When I bake, I usually try to use organic ingredients, less sugar, and healthier alternatives. But today I decided to throw it all out the window.

I was very keen to try out a muffin recipe that was a bit sweeter, richer and basically, something delicious I could serve at a tea party and make people sigh with delight.

This recipe is based on Ainsley Harriott’s Raspberry and White Chocolate Recipe. I used organic white self-raising flour instead of his suggested baking powder and plain flour.

Ingredients
300g self-raising flour
150g golden caster sugar
1 egg
1 tsp vanilla extract
225ml milk
50g butter, melted
100g fresh raspberries
75g chopped white chocolate

Method
1. Preheat the oven to 200C. Cut greaseproof paper into 15cmx15cm squares and push, creasing the paper to fit, into a muffin tin.

2. Sift the flour and baking powder into a large bowl and stir in the sugar. Crack the egg into a separate bowl and whisk in the vanilla extract, milk and melted butter.

3. Stir the liquid into the dry ingredients with the raspberries and chocolate. Take care not to over-mix, no more than 10-15 strokes.

I had a great weekend. It was a wonderful mix of friends, family, good movie, good food, good coffee, a sizzling barbecue and a slow walk in the warm sunshine. It was so good for the soul. And it was a nice contrast to the busy hectic week just past.

Today I’ve been twiddling away at some design work. Just some newsletter, flyer, next year calendar and poster designs for my church and music school. Simple stuff really. It’s really nice to be doing stuff for a non-profit organisation. It feels good to help people, to put in the extra effort, and to do it without expecting anything in return.

Roast Vegetable Pasta Salad Recipe

This is another one of my lazy – but healthy – vegetarian recipes.

Chop 1 medium eggplant, 4 tomatoes, 1 red onion into quarters. Put into a slightly greased oven pan. Throw in 5 cloves of garlic (unpeeled). Drizzle 1 tablespoon of olive oil. Salt and pepper.

Roast at 180ºC for 1 hour. While you’re waiting, Boil 250g of spiral pasta.

When roasting is done, toss in a handful or two of fresh spinach leaves and fresh basil leaves. The heat makes the spinach wilt a bit.

Take out garlic cloves, unpeel, squash. Whisk with ¼ cup of olive oil and ¼ cup of balsamic vinegar. Pour this into the roasted vegetable mix.

Tip in pasta, toss everything, and eat immediately!

(I personally like to throw in some marinated feta too!)

Esmay's birthday 2008

I took Esmay out for dinner last night.

We went to a restaurant called Telawi Street Bistro, in Bangsar, with modern western food. Our dinner tasted great, the service was good. Most importantly, the atmosphere was sophisticated, classy and warm – it was perfect.

Hiking Trip

I love to hike. Whether it's a forest jungle, mountain, even volcano or glacier if I would have chance.

I went to Bukit Melawati on the other day with friends. It was a tremendous hikes with a gang who has some kind of hiking bug. I truly enjoyed the entire trip much!

Although the weather wasn't good, we only saw a blur sunrise.

Still - we had a great time.

I’m keen to try out parts of the Bibbulmun Track one day – apparently one of the world’s great long distance walk trails, stretching nearly 1000kms through the heart of the scenic South West of Western Australia.

I also want to climb Mount Kinabalu and Mount Fuji before I die.

Usually, I’m not one who gets overly weepy by symbols and metaphors. (Ok, maybe they tug at my heart a little). But daffodils do particularly have a special place in my heart, just because my grandpa and uncle died of cancer, and many of them out there survive cancer.

I think daffodils are absolutely beautiful. And that money for cancer research and support is a worthy cause.

In fact, flowering bulbs in general are simply amazing. To think that something so dirty and ugly and looks like a demented onion could possibly erupt into a stunning flower.

And that all the information for bright yellow petals, green stalks and a funny trumpet shape is stored somewhere inside this lump.

I guess in a way, I feel that the bulbs are more beautiful than the flower itself. And possibly a more beautiful symbol of hope.

I was trying to create a question for them in their workbook while considering whether it was a good idea to tell the children about spirits, death, heaven, the afterlife, and lost souls haunting the earth. I mean, if this isn’t the height of progressive teaching for kids, then I don’t know what is. However, he interrupted my deep contemplation.

“Are they just funny little monsters with blankets over their heads?”

Yesterday I was invited to a dog show and competition at Bandar 1U park. It's the first time I've been to a dog event, so was Bean Bean.

We reached the park around 12pm after church, caught the dog competition, which was funny in certain parts but mostly left us awe seeing how the dogs responded to their owners. Brilliant stuff.

I really enjoyed looking at all dogs around the park! Those rare dogs like St. Bernard, huge white chow chow (looks exactly like lion, I was too excited and forgot to photograph again! T.T), pure white Maltese, a numbers of elegant Husky and beautiful Golden.. and some breeds that I can't even name them.

Bean enjoyed very much too as she's received lots of warm welcome from others. Everybody was pretty amazed about her curly hair, I always make fun of her by telling them her nick name is "lun mo" (curly hair) and she's actually from India! *giggles*

My life is insanely crazy with activity. Everyday is a huge adventure. People. Parties. Dinners. Lunches. Gatherings. Shopping. Visiting. Organising. Cooking. Running the studio.

I just want a day where I do NOTHING.

I want to put my feet up. I want to remember how to be still. To contemplate and have meaningful thoughts. To remember that life is good. That things could be worse.

And that my little problems aren’t so bad in the bigger scale of things.

Exquisite Roast Vegetables

This is another of my favourite, healthy and very lazy meals.

Use any sort of vegetables. Egg plant, tomatoes, capsicum, red onions, pumpkin, sweet potato, baby carrots, beetroot, turnips. Add fresh herbs from the garden.

Drizzle lots of olive oil, salt, pepper.

Into a 180C oven for 1.5 hours.

Serving ideas: Toss with pasta. Serve with rice. Or pita bread. Or a bunch of fresh green salad.

Blue eyes

I've always wanted a cat in such a long time.

Guess what?

There was a blue eyes kitty appeared at my studio's staircase yesterday. She has cried for hours. Poor thing! I beg she must be starving.

She's tiny (just about a palm size), dirty and looks terrified. I've absolutely no ideas of taking care for cats, especially a kitty. Luckily my god brother Melvin is a cats lover, he's an expert and has three cats at home.

We straight away sent the kitty to my god father's house after work last night. Everybody was excited about the little one. We gave her some milk but she doesn't seems to like it. Then Mel gave her some mince tuna, she loves it so much!

We have brought her to doctor this morning, and decided to leave her at Melvin's place for the first week since she's being deworm. She's got a little infection on her eyes as well. It's better to let them take good care of her till she get well.

And I've just found out from the doctor that my little kitty is actually not a normal stray cat but a Blue Eyes Siamese!

Wedding Dinner

This weekend I went to a wedding of some good friends of mine, Addy's eldest brother wedding. It was *SUCH* a lovely wedding. Their families and friends were already so intergrated with each other. It was a really nice feelings. There were also zillions of great stories ranging from the hilarious drunken ones to the sweetest romantic stories.

The wedding dinner was at the Grand Ball Room of Bukit Jalil Golf Club Resort. The food was fantastic, the music (Live band) was just perfect. I drank a few glass of red wines. I'm quite particular on wines but it was absolutely not bad at all.

We were on a table with excellent company - full of laughter, chatting, and crazy antics.

Anyway, the bride and groom looked great and extremely happy! The speeches from addy's dad were funny and touching. The MC did a great job. I ate sooooo much food. We had lots of laughs and took lots of photos. We had a fabulous time!

Random Things about Me

I love beautiful things. Art, design, photography, rocks, flowers, landscapes, pottery, jewellery, textures, colours, buildings, people.

I always wanted a tattoo on my back, but couldn’t find/design an image that I’d be happy with for the rest of my life.

I love reading. I think life is too short to read crap books, so I only read books that come highly recommended. I like reading from all genres. Trashy chick lit, hard-core sci-fi, fantasy, thrillers, crime, classics.

I enjoy keeping healthy and active. I like taking walks, jogging, swimming and being outdoors. I’d like to do a bit more scuba diving, snorkeling, kick boxing, and Latin dancing. I also like the occasional game of squash, netball, soccer, tennis and beach cricket.

I enjoy crafty designy things. Ceramics, pottery, knitting, sewing, paper crafts, painting, printing, illustrating, drawing.

I love cooking! And eating. I get such a buzz from experimenting with food and recipes. I prefer fresh, healthy, low-fat, low-sugar foods. But I can’t live without dim sum, pizza, pasta, hamburgers, chocolate and KFC.

I can drink pretty well, and love alcohol but I'm not a drunker. Given a choice, I'd reach for a beer over wine and cocktails.

I’ve worked and studied in Singapore. It was great fun. But the crazy expat life wore me down, and I just wanted to come home to my mother’s cooking and the big Malaysia skies.

I’m a Christian. I reckon that God is cool, loving, down-to-earth and has an awesome sense of humour. But his PR people need to lift their game.

In my list of dating/relationship requirements, I really didn’t care about a guy’s look or race. It was all about confidence, stability, eloquence, a sense of humour and the ability to hold an interesting conversation. But so far I've only dated Asian guys.

I’ve always wanted at least three children. I love big families.

I love going out. Sitting in cafes, dancing in clubs, talking in bars, dining out, house gatherings, parties, barbecues, weddings, picnics! I also love an occasional trip to watch movies, theatre, musicals, symphonies, stand up comedy, rock concerts and live bands.

At the same time, I can’t think of anything more satisfying than sitting in front of TV, eating take-away, lights down low, in my pyjamas and watching crap on TV. I’m a home girl at heart.

Basically, I strive to live a balanced life. Fun. Serious. Fast. Slow. Brainy. Bimbotic. Intense. Lazy. You get the drift.

Happy happy. I'm leaving in 3 more hours. And I have 5 days off starting on tomorrow. Yeepee!!

Basically, most of my students have been to holidays. So I have got a most relaxing saturday morning ever. Hanging around in my little studio, playing puzzles with kids, chatting with parents. Ah what a lovely morning!

Last time I had been to Genting was... 2 years ago! I'm SO excited!!

Haha, I feel like such a kid again. Can't wait.

Looking into the trees

I really enjoy my morning jogs.
So far I’m doing it 5 days a week.
It’s not a long jog, but I'm starting it small.
To improve bit by bit, day by day.

It’s one hour of my time.
Plus I feel incredibly zippy after it.

But my real reason for all the exercise, is because I desperately want to be a lady who’s young, fit, healthy, and active. I want to keep an active social life, get out and about, paint my nails and go to concerts. I want to keep my feet on the ground and have a sense of humour about life and kids.

I think my greatest fear is turning into a frumpy Chinese Aunty while I’m only 25.

Anyway, I'll be leaving to Genting for Sammi Cheng's concert tomorrow! This is the first time I've got chance to attend her live concert. VIP tickets for whole family, 3 days 2 nights short trip is just gonna be a rest and relaxing holidays.

New Car in Town!

I've attended the Yoga class today after being stopped for 3 months. I felt great, Mandy has conducted the class wonderfully.

I just love her way of teaching, clear instructions and well organize lessons.

The class is actually very convenient for me since it's at my studio, but I'm just so lazy to attend sometimes.

Ah... no more laziness, I have to work hark as I'm going to participate in the Penang Bridge Marathon later. Gosh..26km, I have to make it this time!

Organic Watercress

I recently read somewhere that watercress was the newly discovered “superfood” - with lots of health benefits, concentrated antioxidants and amazing cancer fighting properties (it contains a certain compund that prevents damage to the DNA in white blood cells).

My mother used to make watercress soup all the time. I used to LOVE eating the stuff! in salads, in chicken soups, in noodles or just simply fried it. Yum.

Updates- Singapore Trip September '08

So I was back to Singapore in less than one year again, and I felt GREAT! I love the heat, I love the food, I love the shopping!!

I arrived on 1st of September, Monday 7am, and it’s been a crazy whirlwind of courses, seminars, meetings, shopping and eating. This time stayed a bit longer, it’s been so much fun for one whole week!

During the trip, besides the interesting courses, seminars and great people that I've met. I had a list of “MUST SEE” boutiques and fashion designers compiled from dozens of personal recommendations, suggestions and my own online research.

On the top of my list was Soon Lee, in Haji Lane.

I got the impression that it was VERY DIFFERENT to the high-end, designer-brand, super-shiny boutiques in Singapore’s Orchard District.

One of the results of mass production and globalisation is the rise of the conventional shopping mall. These shopping experiences are predictable, and pretty much the same, whether you’re in Malaysia, Australia, Singapore or London.

If you take on fashion and interested to showcase different, unique and local shopping experiences - you must take a look at Haji Lane by yourself.

I'm sure you will love it!

Walking down Haji Lane, you would probably think you arrived at the wrong place for a fashion experience. The lane is long and narrow. There is the occasional piece of rubbish lying around, there are rickshaws (yes, a pedal powered taxi with a charming, old, toothless man!) and rubbish bins are parked next to tiny, two-stroke vans and motorcycles.

Old shop houses run the length of the shopping lane – some shops have vines growing up the building, with aged, oriental murals flaking off the walls. Some have uber modern glass walls, with brushed, stainless steel fittings and amazingly designed wall patterns. The place is crammed with absolutely unique shops and cafes.

I loved all the vibrant colours, deep textures, exotic smells, the mix of old and new, the signs of oriental and global influence. It was incredible.
